Matchweek 5 saw a controversial VAR performance result in a 2-2 draw in the Merseyside derby. Liverpool fans will feel robbed after Jordan Pickford committed a season ending challenge on Van Dijk that saw no disciplinary action as a result, and they were denied a winner in the last minutes due to a very questionable offside call on Sadio Mane in the build up to the eventual Jordan Henderson goal. In other news, West Ham snatched a 3-3 draw at Tottenham after Manuel Lanzini’s world class strike in the dying embers of extra time, proving David Moyes’ decision to sun him on a genius one.
After goals galore in the first 5 weekends, the 6th one was very underwhelming as the only headline fixture between Man United and Chelsea ended in a 0-0 draw, with little in the terms of attacking action. Instead, defensive solidity ruled the Old Trafford grass, as Harry Maguire put in a very good performance and Thiago Silva continued to assure the Chelsea board the business they made in the way of getting him on a free was very shrewd. This was also a weekend in which City could only muster one point out of West Ham, and Leicester beat Arsenal 1-0 in their back garden.
West Ham’s impressive run would come to an end, however, predictably at the hands of Liverpool who made it 6 points out of 6 since the robbery at Goodison Park. As well as this, Villa and Southampton endured a 7 goal thriller in Birmingham, which eventually saw the Saints run out victorious in a 4-3 victory. A ‘classic’ game of two fallen giants, Manchester United and Arsenal, saw the gunners take three points after an interesting and positive game from both sides. It was an Aubameyang penalty that eventually secured the win in the end, as he ended his mini goal drought
