As we live in unprecedented times, the football season is all up in the air with many games seeing cancellation or the lack of fans. The lack of fans changes the dynamic for teams such as Torquay who are heavily reliant on making money through ticket sales. Has Turner backed the right team?

Torquay United is a tiny, but mighty football club based in Devon that Mr Turner is an avid fan of! They compete in the national league in the fifth tier of English football. They were relegated from the national league in 2018, but were then instantly promoted the following year after a good run of results. One of their most well known players is Lee Sharpe, he only played 16 games for Torquay before being sold to Manchester United for £185,000.
Despite the challenges Torquay have faced with the current pandemic, they have had a great start to the season, sitting at the top of the conference premier league having won 8 out of 10 games this season. Recent results have looked promising for Torquay with a 5-0 win over Hartlepool on halloween.
The main question for Torquay is, can they keep this from up for the whole season? If they manage to keep it up then they will see their promotion into the League 2, which is unexpectedly a larger step up. Bearing in mind, locally Wycombe Wanderers were on the brink of being relegated to the national league only 6 years ago, now we see them playing in the championship against some top sides with some well known players. Recently drawing 1-1 against Wayne Rooney’s Derby County.
Torquay’s recent game against Wealdstone saw The Gulls scrape a late winner through Billy Waters to keep themselves holding onto that top spot. Wealdstone went into the break 1-0 up with Danny Parish scoring in the 27th minute. However, the second half belonged to Billy Waters as he scored a brace, with a late 88th minute winner.
With a game in hand against 2nd place Sutton United, Torquay have only got to keep up winning ways and to ensure they carry on distancing themselves from the teams below them to secure themselves a promotion into League 2. Torquay haven’t seen themselves in League two since the 2013-14 season when they finished last in 24th place to submit themselves to relegation back into the Conference Premier. Is this their year?
